Hello all.

I'd like to know what kind of specs i need for a computer to run with basically no frame rate problems.

My gaming computer recently had it's mother board fried and now i need to drop some money on a new mother board.
i had a dual 2.4 intel.

I was looking at Intel Core 2 Quad Proccessor Q8400 (4 m Cache, 2.66 GHZ, 1333 MHz FSB)

I have 8 gigs windows 7 and a ati hd 4350.

Any tech savy people have any opinions/ tips ETC.

Right now i'm using a comp where im getting 5 fps in raids. Which obv doesnt do well for my up time. So i'm hoping to get my performance machine up and running.

Thanks

You just need a new video card. If you have a budget of about $200 or more on a video card you should be golden.

Buy nVidia! ATI cards, while more powerful, have poor driver quality and poor resource management. I'd recommend buying a 9800GT if your motherboard can support GDDR3 graphics cards. Otherwise, go with a 9500GT. 9600GTs have roughly the same performance as 9500's, but have overheating issues and cost $20 more. If you need to know your motherboard's compatability, find its model number (usually printed on it) and google it. It's stats should be posted online somewhere.

Ok thanks for all the tips

I am currently looking at for an i7 1.66 mother board
and a 1 Gb nvidia graphicscard that puts me only 900$ inthe hole

Any thoughts?

Video memory is very little to go on for a graphics card. The 9500GT also has 1GB of video memory and it's only about $80-$90. For $900 that thing better reach out of your computer and jerk you off. You really don't need a card that's that expensive. If you have the ability to afford it, then more power to you, but make sure it's compatible with your PC first. Usually something that powerful also requires additional power from the power source, and you may not have enough watts in your computer for that.

If you guys are going to make recommendations... stop recommending 3 year old parts for fucks sake.

Intel Core i7 920 CPU 2.66GHz Quad Core Hyperthreading (8 Threads) - $260
Motherboard for this chip - $$ Depends on what you pick / features

Intel Core i5 661 3.33GHz Dual Core Hyperthreading - $230'ish
Motherboard for this chip - $$ Approximately $100 give or take

Video Card(s)

GeForce GTS 250 - $139
ATI Radeon 5750 - $154

All prices approximate and sourced from newegg.com

Don't buy a 9500GT or whatever for crying out loud.. that's what I put in my kids throw down computer years ago to get him by.

And for good measure, put a nice Cooler Master 850 Watt PSU or something in your box.

thx for the continued tips

Ps. if youve noticed im kind of computer illiterate im trying to educate myself more so i dont get juked and i know whats what

Years ago? To get him by? Really? Considering the 9k series was introduced 2 years ago, I find it highly doubtful you gave him a 9500 for him to "get by". Nobody ever claimed it was top of the line, but they still work just fine. I'm running a 9500GT on this computer and my FPS never dips below 20 in raids with only a 2.13GHz duo core CPU. Plus I was using it as an example for him saying that the GPU he was looking at had 1GB of memory that memory alone is not a good measurement of power.

Also, zek, I can show you how to install a new graphics card yourself. It literally takes 5 minutes and it is one of the simplest things you can do in terms of hardware replacement. If you do wind up getting a new motherboard or CPU, however, hiring someone is definitely a much smarter choice.

Thanks
But, my mother board is fryed. So i basically have to pay some douchebag to put a new one together.

What are your thoughts on ati 4600? 1gig version?

Like I said, ATIs are powerful cards with poor drivers and resource management. Stick with nVidias, they're far more reliable.

Do you have a 64-bit operating system? Because if you don't, you're wasting 4gigs of RAM. 32-bit OS's (XP, Vista, and 7) only register 4gigs of RAM.

Isn't it more cost effective to order a new computer online, selecting the parts you want for a bare minimum of $900, not including shipping?

... or does the average decent (able to run dual monitors) computer go for more than $1000 these days now?

I got my computer last December, had a friend help me select pieces and put it together. Cost me 830 with shipping (and dinner for my friend... so, 850, maybe...). I didn't end up buying a new monitor, so I only run single screen... but, I have the capabilities of dual monitors, if I had another one.

I need the power to do dual monitors. It'll make my projects go quicker... >.>

That *really* depends.

On a budget, you can do something along the lines of (from memory)

Case - $35 (dont expect a great ps)
MB - $60 (no frills mATX)
CPU - $85 (dual core 2.8ghz E7300 or so)
Memory - $55 (2gb)
HD - $60 (320gb ish)
Video Card - $150 (this is where you thrown down a little extra)

$445 spent so far and we're missing a few things:

Optical Drive - You may or may not have one to take from old machine to new
KB & Mouse - same story
Monitor(s) - same story
OS - I won't tell you what's right, if you can get an OS free/cheap go for it.

How can I make that machine bettter?

Spend more on the case, get a better MB (one for core i5) and a core i5 chip. Double the ram to 4gb and go 64 bit OS. Spend $200 on the video card instead of $150.

You'll spend about what fey has guessed... roughly $800-$1k

Getting the parts and assembling it yourself is much much cheaper, but if you have no idea what you are getting yourself into and would like some support it's always a good idea to have a boutique build it or even buy a box store unit and customize that.

I've been building computers since the Intel Pentium DX4/100Mhz days. When 4MB of memory hit the all time low of $175 I shit my pants and bought 16MB. I know how to build them, fix them, destroy them. If you're going to listen to anybody, listen to someone that breathes eats and shits computers for a living.
